Jaret and Brandon talk about how tech companies, like Facebook and Instagram, are adapting as an attempt to stay more relevant. They continue with conspiracies about aliens, the moon landing, and where technological advances will lead us.
Many parents have the philosophy that they can live their dreams through their children, whether it be a father putting his son into football, or a mother putting her daughter in an activity she could never excel in. It’s very tough to let go of your child who is a direct extension from you. But that’s what they are – from you, not through you. You provide as much as you can, but you cannot be attached to the result because you’ll try to control your child and live vicariously through them. Understand that their passion is different than yours.
We all procrastinate doing something, especially with anything that has the ability to change your life. Why is that? The limbic system and prefrontal cortex within our brain are in an argument with one another. Whenever you get an idea about something – even if it’s not the best idea – if you don’t do it right then an there, it’s lost forever. It will never have as much energy and fruitfulness as in that moment. You need to do it right then and there. Stop waiting for tomorrow.
Study the personalities of the people in the city in which you live. Do you like the people you are surrounded by? Do they have depth? Are they standoffish? Make sure you are able to get good people in your circle who share similar values and goals.
How do you make a decision between two bad alternatives? When looking at each decision, ask yourself, “What’s the worst thing that can happen, and can I live with it?” Usually that sheds light right away. After you make the decision, you can’t waver and say, “What if I made the other decision?” Don’t look back. You have to move forward and live with it.
We are all built on the shoulders of giants – the titans that came before us. Tony Robbins stood on the shoulders of Jim Rohn and Napoleon Hill, and is now a titan himself. He has reached the pinnacle he’s at only because he’s put in not just the work, but because he’s cultivated the experience of what it’s like to work one-on-one with people and groups.
There are professional mentors you can hire, and also mentors in your field that you can look up to that could help you on your journey. The top mentors are difficult to reach – you have to think outside the box if you want to contact them. Look up to someone who has achieved what you want to achieve, and capture their attention. You can get on their radar not by praising them, but by shedding light on something they could improve upon, and suggest helping them. Another way to get on their radar is to find something out about them that not too many people know. This shows that you’re not just on the surface, but that you have gone deep in their material, research, or product, and that you’re there to help.
Whatever business you’re in, have the mindset that you want to dominate that industry – not just go in there to take a small percent of the market share. Howard Shultz, founder of Starbucks, wanted to own coffee. He categorized a brand. That’s ultimately the mindset you need to have.
Benjamin Franklin once said, “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.” You obviously want some security in your life, but never at the expense of your freedom. Is there another way to get the security you want without compromising freedom? There is. You just need to think outside the box.
